The Blog Tour

Full disclosure: We’re proud of our book. We think it’s pretty good–in fact, we think it’s the best book on the subject out there, whether you’re trying to figure out the ins and outs of reading to a baby or toddler or just wondering what books would help you potty train the little diaper-dude.

But it’s not going to help unless you read it, and no one will know if they want to read it unless they know it’s out there. We needed to get the word out to young moms and their friends, and as a blogging mom myself, I knew exactly how we could do it.

I wrote a bunch of fellow bloggers and asked them if they’d like to take a look at Reading with Babies. Absolutely no strings–write about it if you want to, say whatever you want to, ask us questions if you want to, even tell us which books we left off our lists and why you love them. Basically, if you like the book, help us get the word out.

And they are! Take a look at what these blogging moms say about the book, and read on for what they have to say about everything from poop to pap smears (that’s what blogs are for, after all).

“This is a great book for new parents. This book, along with a few of the books recommended, tucked inside a big cellophane wrapped basket would make a perfect baby shower gift (it’s such an Oprah-to-Gwyneth thing to do).”

“Reading with Babies, Toddlers, and Two\’s is a small book jammed with tons of very useful information. The book provides very comprehensive viewpoints about early reading from a range of sources from statistical to personal Mom experiences. Its not just a list of books, it establishes a foundation for why, what, and how reading is signifigant from the earliest part of your child’s life.”

“Because of its layout — the lists collected amongst concise, readable discussions about the mechanics of reading — Reading with Babies makes a great resource for parents for a number of years. It’s light enough to be held in one hand, written to be read in small doses, and therefore ideal reading material when your baby is brand new.”

I really liked the book. I’m going to tell you all the stuff I liked and there was a lot, so forgive me. I liked the tone a lot. As a first time Mom you have so many questions and doubts. Am I doing this right? Will I screw my kid up? Will they make it into college? Will I have a smart kid? I think having this book when my first baby was born would have helped me feel better. I knew that you should talk and read as much as possible to your baby. I remember having my firstborn, N (now 4) lay on my chest as I read to her. KJ describes this and reassures us that we don’t have to be reading “baby books” at this stage. She also gives lots of ideas for how to make reading more fun–even when you have a baby who doesn’t like to sit still.”

“After I went through this book I was so inspired that I took my family to the neighborhood Barnes & Noble. I am happy to report that instead of looking at the kid’s book section for hours I was able to pick out two books within fifteen minutes and left feeling very confident that these books would win two thumbs up from my mini-critics.
I was right.”

“I’m not a big how-to-guide book reader. I do not read parenting books and have not since I was pregnant and curious. I’m not as curious now that I have a child and find parenting books redundant and boring. I am also quite stubborn, often impossible to reason with, convince or even teach. Let’s just say I am not the kind of person who would pick up any kind of book that might “help me.”

Reading with Babies, Toddlers and Twos is not that kind of book. … It’s enlightened, nurturing and full of great ideas and I would recommend the book to all story-reading parents.”

Girls Gone Child

“I appreciate that they offer different ways to read to kids of different ages. They give some good ideas on how to make reading with your child more interesting for them and (importantly) for you. Because, frankly, I get pretty bored reading the same damn books over and over again. Sometimes we just look at the pictures and talk about them. Sometimes E and L read and I do tequila shooters. We all have fun!”–

“Reading With Babies, Toddlers, and Twos would make a nice gift to place in a gift basket for a new mom.” — Mrs. Mogul

“Okay, this seems like a no-brainer, right? You get a bunch of board books and start reading to your babies. Goodnight Moon x infinity. Then they get older and you move on to Karen Katz and Eric Carle books. That’s all good, but Straub & Dell’Antonia suggest myriad ways to help kids get more enjoyment out of reading. I was an elementary teacher so I thought I already knew a lot about reading strategies and techniques, but there is (always) so much more to learn on the subject. The authors present it all in a very easy-to-absorb way.” –CityMama

“I read a super book the other day. You MUST get it if you’re struggling with how best to approach literacy in young children…”– Christine Hohlbaum, DiaryofaMother

‘My favorite thing about this book are the suggestions in every chapter on how to incorporate books into your everyday life. Books aren’t just for sitting on the shelf, only to be taken out at assigned reading times. Books, reading, and storytelling can and should be a part of playtime, mealtime, car rides, even TV-watching time, and it’s this philosophy that spoke to me the most.’
One plus One plus One…
“I was thrilled and slightly deflated to discover that it is actually a very useful little book, easy to page through but equally suited to more in-depth reading.”
