| Susan Straub is the founder/director of The READ TO ME Program, Inc, an intergenerational reading program that has connected parents, babies, and books since 1989. It’s designed for any young family, but particularly for those who don’t yet know the pleasures and importance of using books to raise their babies.
Current collaborations are in progress with the Harlem Children’s Zone Baby College and Baby Gems, the Brooklyn Public Library, Reach Out and Read, the NYC Immigrant Family Literacy Alliance, and the NYC Department of Education’s LYFE Program for teen mothers and their babies. Susan was honored as New Yorker of the Week by New York 1 (television) in 2000; featured in an article in Oprah’s O Magazine in 2002, and honored as Champion for Children by Child Care, Inc. 2005. The READ TO ME VideoGuide was created as a demonstration of one program with Brooklyn teen mothers. A new video Reading With Babies (Leyendo Con Bebés) that features 50 babies under two ‘reading’ with their parent(s) was awarded CINE’s prestigious Golden Eagle Award for production excellence in 2005. Publications beside the new Reading with Babies, Toddlers & Two, Sourcebooks, Inc., co-authored with KJ Dell’Antonia, May 2006, include a chapter in Family Literacy: From Theory to Practice, published by the International Reading Association in 2003. Susan is married to novelist Peter Straub. They have two grown children, Ben 28 and Emma 26. |
KJ Dell’Antonia is an attorney turned writer whose work has recently appeared in American Baby, Parenting and Mothering.
