Big shout out to Carolyn See, who I have never met (I’d like to!) but who I owe, big time.
See, ten days ago today, (that would be a week ago Wednesday) I cleared my decks for what I’d planned to be one big week of book revision. It wasn’t meant to get what I hope will be my next book into any kind of final form, but just to get it into a nice cohesive shape for my agent, so that she can read it and tell me which bits suck without being distracted by lines like THANKSGIVING SWIMSUIT SCENE HERE and FIX THIS. In other words, a revision of messy incomplete draft one into actual draft one.
Now, I have no idea how to revise a book. Does anyone? Yes, I’ve written a book, but it was a nice easy book, all lists and clearly defined paragraphs and what not. I did not have to consider such things as character consistency and whether or not there are themes that carry through the book, yet evolve.
I say to you right now, there are no evolving themes in Reading with Babies, Toddlers and Twos. Shoot me.
But this is a memoir, and a story, and rather a long one, and it is supposed to include all of those things, plus although you can include some lists and maybe a paragraph heading or two, there’s a limit to how much of that a reader will put up with. So this is a real revision, and here’s what Carolyn See (in her book Making a Literary Life) has to say (totally paraphrased) about book revision: Print the whole book out, she says. Get a nice glass of wine and a separate piece of paper and a pen and just read. No line editing. Just read it. All you’re allowed to do with respect to any given chapter is a little chart: What I Have/What I Need.
Well, I put my draft on the iPad (which is the only way I can keep myself from line editing) and I shortened that chart down to just What I Need, because I was drinking my glass of wine and I didn’t want to have to put it down too often, and I went through the whole thing, and I made lists of what I needed in each chapter. And I got to the end, and it didn’t seem too daunting (well, it did, but it seemed do-able, as long as I kept my expectations low and remembered another great piece of writing advice from Anne Lamott: shitty first drafts). So I sent my agent a nice little email, and I said, you’ll have it next Friday (that would be last Friday) because without an external deadline, I can get really caught up in that whole have-a-glass-of-wine-and-make-a-chart thing. Also, laundry.
And then the blog editor of the New York Times called and asked me to write the Motherlode blog for a week, and after a few careful seconds of studied deliberation (because I wouldn’t want to seem overeager) I said, hell yes. And then I sent my agent another email, about my new and improved use of my cleared week, and then I did that (that was last week) and all was good in the world and bells rang and it was great fun but needless to say, I didn’t touch my book draft at all.
And then yesterday I had a few things to deal with, and so it wasn’t until today, at noon, that I sat down with my draft and my list (no wine this time) and realized now I actually had to revise the thing. I could barely remember what it was about at this point, and things looked bleak. But there was my list.
And it is working. There is the list: I’m missing this, the mood is erratic here (more than it should be) why is Wyatt in my lap when in the last paragraph he was in Rob’s and what is this bit FOR? And two hours later I looked up from a revised chapter and prologue, and I feel ready to actually go on, and reasonably confident that I actually CAN go on.

Should I play it cool and tell you that of course I’ve been asked to take the first week in what will probably be a rotation of writers filling in for Lisa Belkin at the New York Times‘ Motherlode blog?
Should I say that after all, I do already cover parenting, culture and policy issues for Slate‘s XXFactor blog—already a position to be proud of, with a rightly respected publication?
Should I tell you that the Times won’t find anyone better, and pull on my high-heeled black cowboy boots, made for demonstrating that I am taller and tougher and cooler than anyone else out there, turn on a heel, flip my hair and walk casually away? (I’m not sure how I’d do that on online. Maybe it could be done on Tumblr, but WordPress is kind of old school. You can tell, because it has all of its vowels.)
I can’t. I’m too busy giggling gleefully and jumping up and down. I get to be the first to cover the Motherlode blog, now that Lisa Belkin is off to work her magic at the Huffington Post. I get to stomp right up to my usual office (I do think I will wear my boots) and write columns–8-10 of them–that will run in the Motherlode space she’s cultivated so well. I get to try on the mantle of my favorite parenting blog–the parenting blog that isn’t just a parenting blog, the one with some of the best commenters ever, the blog that lets the parenting conversation that we’re all interested in keep a certain spark of intellect while still getting right in there with breastfeeding, circumcision, working and parenting, exhaustion, college applications, sports try-outs, open house night, and all the other so-called minutia that really surround what most of us consider in equally important (and sometimes more important) sphere of our lives.
I’m revved.
And I’ve just read 67 comments mourning Lisa’s departure (if it weren’t for this development, I’d have made it 68—I love reading Lisa). It will never be the same, they declare. Our guide to the questions we hadn’t even thought to ask is gone. Reset the RSS feed, change the bookmarks–what could make Motherlode still worth reading?
Well, me. And them–if they stay. (Please stay!)
Lisa’s are big boots to fill. (Not that her feet are anything but a very ladylike size eight-and-a-half, I’m sure.) She brings smart, wry thought to topics ranging from autism to zoo therapy, and it’s thought that invites the reader to think, too. To think and respond and respond again. I think me and my black boots can do that too. I don’t have the last word on whether we, as adoptive parents, should search for our children’s birth parents before they’re old enough to search themselves, on how to improve school lunches, on what chores kids can and should do around the house or even which giant, inevitably gas-guzzling 8-passenger vehicle I should buy next to shepherd my family up our rutted dirt road (all topics I’m considering for next week, along with whatever news the week brings). I have ideas. I have doubts. I have words. I have blogging, bonding, blending and bitching, just like it says in my subhead. I hope to mix those things together into a Motherlode that’s both what it was before, and then some, next week at least. (Who are we kidding? I hope they hire me to make that potent mix for years.)
And I hope everybody I know comes with me. Because honestly, I’m nervous. Revved and nervous. If I have to face all those people who just want Lisa back all by myself, I’m not sure how much my boots are gonna help!

I refuse to wave the white flag, but there is now no way I can meet that Dec. 31st deadline. All my babysitting for the end of the week has fallen through, so unless I skip the New Year’s Eve party we’re supposed to attend in favor of drafting, there’s no way for me to get anything done. Even today, I kept thinking–what about tonight? And tomorrow night? But it’s time to be realistic. We came home from the holidays to a house with no heat last night, and both would up with very little sleep. I can do a little, but not enough–which doesn’t mean I won’t do that little. I will get there.
Circumstances and small children conspire against me.
Tonight I gave up to a concentrated effort to find a couple of new critique partners, thanks to a very generous member of the Chicklit group I belong to, who’s doing some matching. More than worth it. I’m going to be ready for that help very soon. I have one good partner, but I’ll need a few voices. Tomorrow there will continue to be drafting. All I can do is keep plugging along.
But I am disappointed. And I feel tethered and tied by my choices. I have never been good at conforming to the desires and goals of others, and the fact that the others are, in this case, very very small doesn’t make it any easier.

I won’t be posting a NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) finisher medal here. In the end, I wrote more like 8,000 words, although I did manage a fair amount of work this past month–just not on the novel. I sent article queries, I polished and sent out an essay, I traveled…well, excuses. Good ones, but excuses. I have finally grown comfortable enough with the possibility of rejection and with the growing body of words from my tap-tapping little fingers to confide that i am writing a novel. In fact, recent word count has me at 41,481 words. Many of them are deeply crappy words, certainly, but still words. Absolutely words, all mine.
I suppose I’m partly ok with sharing this because a) I am not going to tell you what it is about, I don’t do that, it’s too weird and what if I change it and b) I have finally been published enough times to feel confident that even if this particular novel never sells, I will continue to be published in some recognizable form that I can trot out at parties. So it’s fine to share.
Plus. I need some accountability here. One of the many problems with writing a novel that’s not actually under contract is that no one cares whether you write it or not except you. So you set your little goal, say 8 scenes a week for the month of October (just say) and then you write one in the first week and no one punishes you. No lashes, no scoldings, no nothing, just you, saying merrily and encouragingly to yourself “it’s ok, you can still do this! That just makes fifteen next week!” Not that that actually happens.
Well, ok, it happened. Last week. So, fifteen scenes this week. (Scenes are kind of a fun way to measure, because some are very short and some long, and I have a nice ever-changing outline of them that currently takes me right to the climax of the book, probably about two chapters from the end, so that I can see actual progress.)
I’ve done two. I’m partway through three. And here I go, with the goal of wrapping three and four in the next hour 45 (ah, ask not for whom the babysitter tolls, she tolls for me).
